Inside Up: Leading Under Pressure
The Moment Before
There’s a moment — most leaders know it, even if they rarely name it.
The room shifts.
The numbers move.
The decision that felt clear an hour ago suddenly isn’t.
And something happens inside, before conscious thought catches up.
You feel it — a tightening, a pull toward a familiar move.
You’re already leaning in a direction before you’ve chosen it.
The version of yourself that’s been here before.
That knows what to do — or thinks it does.
That’s not weakness.
That’s not failure.
That’s the pattern.
And it runs deeper than strategy.
⸻
I’ve watched a leader read a room perfectly at 9am and miss it entirely by 11.
Nothing changed externally.
The pressure just accumulated — silently, with stealth.
Just the quiet creep of it — until the gap between how they were showing up and how they wanted to lead was already open.
That’s not unusual.
That’s the norm.
That’s leadership.
⸻
The curve you already know
Most leaders are familiar with the stress-performance curve — that arc from under-stimulated to optimal to overwhelmed.
The far right of that curve is labelled zone of delusion. Not high stress. Not burnout. Delusion.
Under pressure, we don’t just move along the curve.
We drop zones.
Delusion. Disconnection.
We don’t talk about either enough.
Because burnout doesn’t tell you what someone is capable of.
It tells you what sustained pressure, without enough recovery, does to a human being.
Those are very different conversations.
⸻
What the pattern actually is
Under pressure, we don’t rise to the moment.
We default to what’s already in us — the conditioning, the reflexes, the interpretive habits built over years of navigating complexity.
The pattern doesn’t announce itself.
It feels like clarity.
What pressure reveals isn’t just a pattern. It reveals your current level of emotional regulation — how much of what’s happening inside is running you, versus being understood by you.
It reveals your maturity — the gap between your instinctive response and your considered one.
And it reveals your integrity — not moral integrity, but structural integrity. Whether you hold your shape under load, or whether you drift from who you are when the pressure is on.
These aren’t fixed.
They’re developmental.
But they’re only developable if they’re first seen clearly.
⸻
The leaders I work with aren’t short on capability.
They’re carrying real weight — commercially, relationally, organisationally.
What brings them to this work isn’t a deficit.
It’s that growing awareness that something is running underneath — and they want to see it before it runs them.
Because what happens inside doesn’t stay inside.
It shapes tone. It shapes trust.
It shapes whether the room opens or closes when things get hard.
⸻
The leadership reality no one talks about
Right now, pressure isn’t abstract.
It’s in the room before the meeting starts.
In the decision that can’t wait.
The messy middle isn’t the problem to navigate around.
It’s the zone of genius.
Pressure doesn’t change you.
It shows you.
⸻
What stays in the room
The thing always gets done.
Decisions land. Projects move. The task completes.
And people leave.
Carrying what wasn’t said.
What was visible but unnamed.
What everyone felt and nobody found the words for.
This isn’t just a leadership question.
It’s a humanship one.
When you leave the room —
do you feel relief that you survived another meeting. Just.
⸻
What shifts it
Not more effort.
Not better frameworks applied from the outside in.
Grounded enough to stay in contact with what’s actually happening — not a managed version of it.
Orientated enough to know what matters right now, as distinct from what’s loud.
And observant enough to catch it forming. Not after. Not in the debrief. As it happens.
Most leaders don’t miss it because they can’t see it.
They miss it because they’re already moving.
⸻
A reflection to close with
The real failure is the absence of the loop.
No reflection.
No reset.
No recalibration.
No reconnection.
Come back to yourself.
Come back to the room.
Come back to the mess of it.
That’s not a consolation.
That’s the work.
⸻
Pressure starts as a whisper.
Our job — if we choose it — is to understand it before it runs us.
Not to remove it.
Not to perform through it.
To relate to it differently.
To stay in the loop.
To come back — always — to the messy middle.
This is Inside Up.
Not just better leadership.
Humanship under pressure.
🪿·•• If something in this landed — I'd love to know what it stirred.

Thought provoking as ever Fi - ‘choice’ in that flight, flight, freeze moment when we can be hijacked by our old habits and patterns that don’t always serve us well. ‘Using the moment before’ - well said 🙌
